APPLES IN WINTER [3]. AKA and see "Rolling down the Hill (2)." Irish, Reel (whole time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Kerr assigns an Irish provenance to the melody, perhaps having retrieved it from Irish violinist biography:R.M. Levey's 1858 collection. The reel also was entered into the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of uilleann piper and Church of Ireland cleric biography:James Goodman[1], and into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894). It belongs to a family of tunes that includes O'Neill's "Rolling down the Hill (2),” "Kerry Lasses (3) (The)," "I Sat Within the Valley Green," “Mountain Lark (1) (The),” “Old Wheels of the World (The)."
