AUSTIN TIERNEY'S (Ríl Aibhistin Uí Thiarnaigh). AKA and see "Farewell to Erin (1)," "Cherry Tree (1) (The)," "Down with the Tea Tacklings," "Flags of Dublin (The)," "Flying Column (2) (The)." Irish, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Breathnach): AA'BB' (Prior). The tune appears as "Maid in the Cherry Tree (2) (The)" in Bernard Flaherty's Trip to Sligo (1990), perhaps a miss-titling of "The Cherry Tree". Michael Coleman recorded this tune for Columbia in 1921 in a medley with "Farewell to Ireland" (see "Farewell to Erin (2)") although the label reads only "Farewell to Ireland."
Austin Tierney (1888-1936) was a member of the long-lived Kilfenora Céili Band, County Clare, in the early 20th century. The '20s era core group consisted of Jim Mulqueeney (fiddle), Jim McCormack (flute), John Joe Lynch (fiddle & drums), Austin Tierney (fiddle) and Lynch's sister, Mrs. Brigid McGrath, on concertina. They were sometimes assisted by Tom Ward - (fiddle), Lil McCormack, (piano), Paddy "Pepper" Linnane, Tommy Mulqueeney, Pat Madigan (banjo, clarinet, bass), Jimmy Leyden (drums), brother and sister Paddy and Nora "Marshall" McMahon (flute and fiddle respectively) and Maureen Kelly (piano). Tierney was born in Lickeen, Kilfenora, Co. Clare, Ireland, and died at in Ballytarsna.
