CALIFORNIA HORNPIPE [3]. AKA - "California Reel (3)." AKA and see "Pink Eyed Lassie," American, Reel and Hornpipe (2/4 timd). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "California Hornpipe (3)" was originally "California Reel (1)," first printed in blackface minstrel performer and composer George H. Coes' Coes Album of Jigs and Reels (1876, p. 54). Coes was active in several minstrel organizations in California in the 1850's, and his volume contains many tunes either composed by or named for fellow minstrels active in the state during those years. It seems, from the sheer number of such tunes in Coes' collection, that they were significant years for Coes.

The tune's name changed to "California Hornpipe" in Köhler's Violin Repository, Book 2 (1881-1885), who printed two such tunes with that name in his collections. However, this tune (unlike "California Hornpipe (2)", which was composed by James Hill) is unattributed in the book (as it was in Coes volume).

"California Hornpipe (3)" is the same tune, printed at about the same time, as "Pink Eyed Lassie" in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), and just prior a few years to that, as "Jack O'Lantern Reel, in Boston music publisher Elias Howe's Musician's Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7.
