DARKEY^[1] UNDER THE WOODPILE. AKA and see "Susan Lick the Laddle," "O Little Girl What Makes You Look So Clever," "Girl That Looks So Clever O!, The". American, Reel. USA, southwestern Pa. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Collector Samuel Bayard was unable to trace this tune to overseas antecedents. However, the octave leap in the beginning of the first strain is reminiscent of the "Miss McLeod's Reel (1)/Stoney Point (1)/Wild Horse" tune family. It is supposed the derogatory term "darkie" was at one time thought to be marginally more acceptable than more offensive terms.
