"Many of the long notes are marked, in [William] Forde's MS., with shakes, as Walsh played them on his violin: too many I think: and I have omitted them. As to the bar marked 'A', those who wish to avoid the ornamental notes will sinply play the four large notes. A very lovely melody" [Joyce]. Virginia Blankenhorn (Univ. of Edinburgh) points out that striping the ornamentation from the melody "reveals a serviceable tune suitable for a text in ballad meter. The last half of the tune is a mirror-image of the first half, giving a symmetrical ABBA quatrain structure"[1].
