DORSETSHIRE HORNPIPE, THE. English, Hornpipe. D Major (Kennedy, Raven): B Flat Major (Howe, O'Neill, Wilson). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. One of the tunes associated by Emmerson (1971) with the stage character solo-hornpipe dance. The melody also can be used for a schottische. The name Dorset stems from the Latin term Dornsaete, signifying the people whom made their homes around the Roman city of Dorchester (Matthews, 1972).
