DUKE OF GLOUCESTER'S NEW MARCH, THE. AKA - "Duke of Gloster's New March," "Duke of Gloucester's March (2) (The)." English, March (4/4 time). England, Shropshire. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody dates to as early as 1770 when it was published as "Duke of Gloster's New March" in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Compleat Tutor for the Fife (London). It proved nearly as popular as "Duke of Gloucester's March (2) (The)", which appeared around the same time, and was subsequently printed in a number of 18th and early 19th century English and American instrumental tutors for the fife, flute and oboe. It also was included in the American music manuscript collections of flute player Daniel Henry Huntington (1817, Onondaga, New York), Abel Shattuck (1801, Colrain, Mass.), and flute player John Hoff (1797, Lancaster, Pa.). In England it was included in the music manuscript collections of William Clark (c. 1770, Lincoln, although may have been entered later, in a different hand) and John Moore (c. 1837, Shropshire). "Duke of Gloucester New March" was also entered in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter[1] (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England.
