EARL OF ELGEN'S [2]. Scottish, Strathspey. D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune appears in Malcolm MacDonald's 2nd Collection, dedicated to the Earl of Breadalbane. However, the melody appears to be the composition of Magdalene Stirling of Ardoch, a keyboard player and composer whose tunes were often published by others before she issued her own Twelve Tunes in 1812. They were sometimes not attributed to anyone, or to "biography:Miss Stirling of Ardoch." Magdealene (1765–1846) was the youngest daughter of Sir William Stirling, 4th Baronet of Ardoch, Perthshire, and his wife Christian Erskine. She died unmarried.
