FATHER KELLY'S (JIG). AKA and see "Lough Derg Jig." Irish, Double Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Miller): AABB'CC (Mulvihill). Composed by the late Father P.J. Kelly (1926–2006, originally from Graigue, Woodford, County Galway), who originally entitled it "Lough Derg Jig." Kelly was ordained a priest in the Columban order in 1950 and was assigned to a post in Fiji, where he stayed for some 20 years, subsequently serving in Pakistan and Perth before returning to Ireland. His first piece was composed in 1960, when he returned to his home in Woodford for a holiday. The story goes:
He had been playing with a group of local musicians when they joked about what would happen when they reached the end of O'Neill's 1001 Tunes. So, PJ half-joked that they could write their own. They all agreed to meet up the following week with their attempts at new pieces. When the time came, PJ was the only one who had written something, which he named "The Lough Derg Jig," called after the lake near his Woodford home. (Dearbhla Geraghty, Connacht Tribune.
