GET UP JOHN. American, Reel. D Major. GDad or Standard tunings (fiddle). ABBAACCA'A'B'B'A'A'CC. The fiddler on Bill Monroe's recording played the tune in GDad tuning, according to Stacy Phillips. Monroe claims authorship of the melody, although it appears it was Monroe's attempt at adapting his Uncle Pen Vandiver's version of "Sleepy-Eyed John." Monroe used an open D-tuning on his mandolin (F#A, DD, aa, ac#) for the piece, in imitation of the cross-tuning of Uncle Pen's fiddle. See also Tex Atchison's song adaptation, "Sleepy-Eyed John."
