GIRL OF KNOCKLONG, THE. Irish, Air (4/4 time). E Minor/G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Learned by antiquarian and collector P.W. Joyce as a boy in Limerick, c. 1840's. Knocklong [1] is a small village situated in County Limerick, Ireland. Fr. John Quinn finds the air was first printed by Holden (c. 1805) as "Renardine." It was employed by Thomas Moore for his song "From this hour the pledge is given," Patriotic words were written to the melody by Michael Scanlon (1836-1900) for his song "Jackets Green (The)" (see also his songs "Bold Fenian Men" and "Limerick is beautiful").
