GUNNERSBURY HOUSE. English, Jig. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Gunnersbury House, Middlesex, west London, was originally built in the Palladian style by architect John Webb as a country manor house for John Maynard, a Cromwellian-era lawyer and politician. Its appearance as the title of a country dance in London publisher Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1765 collection undoubtedly has much to do with its purchase in 1760 for Princess Amelia, the favorite daughter of King George II. Amelia used the manor from 1763-1786 as a country summer retreat and landscaped it in the 18th century style. As the aunt of King George III, "that odd and hearty lady" made Gunnersbury House famous with her parties and political intrigues.
