See also the related "White Fish in the Rapids." The melody was printed in Glasgow publisher George Cameron's Cameron's Selection of Violin Music [1] (1859). A untitled version from the C.J. Surtees manuscript [2], Northumberland, dates to the early 19th century (while Surtees' name is on the cover, the entries are in many hands). It is there set in the key of 'C'.
