The title is from a song by Scottish poet Robert Burns, set to a version of the tune "Merrily Danced the Quaker." "Blithe have I been" was also entered into the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter, a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset (p. 23 of the ms.).
