CARAQUET, LA. French-Canadian, Reel (cut time). A Major. AEae tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDDD. "La Caraquet" is from the repertoire of Aurel Parent of Cap Chat, Gaspésie, recorded in the field in 1955 by Father Gernaiun Lemieux who was on vacation in the town at the time. Parent was about age 90 at the time, but was well-known in the region as a dance fiddler. The tune is described by Anne Lederman in her article on "Fiddling" in the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada (1992) as an Acadian tune that is typically played with the 'D' string removed altogether and the lowest ('G') string tuned to 'A' in order to facilitate a droning effect throughout.
