FOINS, LES. AKA and see "Danse des Foins (La)." French-Canadian, Reel (cut and 3/2 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABA'B'CB"A"B"'C'. "Les Foins" (AKA "Danse des Foins"), 'the hay-maker's', is the name of a dance with its own tune in Québec, perhaps dating to the 1700's and which may have French origins, according to Marius Barbeau (Anne Lederman, "Fiddling", Encyclopaedia of Music in Canada, 1992). Soucy researcher Jean Duval finds that Soucy's "Les foins", a suite with numerous variations, quotes the English "Miss Gayton’s Hornpipe" as its core motif[1].
