YE'RE OVER LONG IN COMING. Scottish, March. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Winstock gives this as the name of the tune played by the defenders of Jellalabad in 1842, upon the arrival of a relief force under the English General Pollock. The surrounded British at the garrison had sallied out and won a decisive victory, entitling the 13th Regiment to greet the newcomers with the slightly derisive refrain (Winstock, 1970). John Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Volume 7 records that the tune the 13th's band played was "Oh but you've been long a-coming."
