The tune appears in the section of 'Perthshire Airs' in Patrick MacDonald's collection of Highland vocal airs, published in Edinburgh in 1784. The translation given with the title above is the one MacDonald gave; however, a more literal translation might be "a hundred farewells from me to the little jewel." Poet Robert Burns had considered this tune as the vehicle for his song "My Love is Like a Red Red Rose (2)," but discarded it in favor of Neil Gow's "Major Graham of Inchbrakie."
