Robert William Duff (1767-1834)
MR. DUFF (OF FETTERESSO’S) BIRTHDAY [1]. Scottish, Reel (whole time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler biography:Robert Petrie (1767-1830). The melody appears in his Second Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796, p. 16). The title refers to Robert William Duff of Fetteresso (1767-1834), born at Logie, the son of Vice Admiral Robert Duff and Helen Duff. He commanded the Forfar Artillery and Kincardine Millitia for a period and was known as 'The Colonel' afterwards. As a young man aged 22, he married his stepsister and second cousin, Mary Morison[1], in Edinburgh in 1789, and together they raised at least eight children. Duff's birthday is unknown, only the year of his birth. Fetteresso Castle is a 14th-century tower house, rebuilt in 1761 as a Scottish Gothic style Palladian manor, about 17 miles south of Aberdeen.

  1. It is tempting to think that Mary Morison and fiddler-composer John Morison were related. John composed several tunes for the Duff family of Fetteresso.
