NEW BRIG OF GLASGOW, THE.AKA - "New Bridge of Glasgow." AKA and see "Young Invercauld's Strathspey." Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Cole): AAB (Howe): AA'B (Gatherer). An anonymous tune commemorating the opening of a new bridge in Glasgow which was completed in 1768. According to John Glen's (1891) "Analytical Table" the earliest printing of a tune by the name "New Bridge of Glasgow" was in biography:Joshua Campbell's A Collection of the Newest Reels and Minuets (1778, p. 24), which was a cheaper issue than his strathspey collections, the contents evidently not composed by Campbell but rather collected by him from other sources [needs verification]. The strathspey melody has also been attributed to fiddler-composer biography:Robert Petrie, who printed it as "Young Invercauld's Strathspey" in his Fourth Collection of Strathspey Reels, Jiggsaround 1805. The mid-19th century Hamilton's Universal Tune Book proclaimed "New Bridge of Glasgow" was printed in that volume "for the first time"; clearly an erroneous statement.
