BONAPARTE CROSSING THE RHINE [2]. AKA and see "Bonaparte Crossing the Alps," "Bonaparte Crossing the Rocky Mountains," "Bonaparte's March (3)," "First Light of Day," "From Galway to Dublin," "From Galway to Dublin Town," "Listowel Hornpipe," "Tom Ash's March." March (4/4 time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (O'Neill): AABB (Howe). The tune is also the vehicle for numerous songs: researcher Conor Ward finds two as "The Potato" and "Let Mr. McGuire sit down." "Jerry Daly's Hornpipe (2)" has melodic and form (AABA phrasing) similiarities. "Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine (2)" was entered into the music copybooks of American musician M.E. Eames (probably Philadelphia, frontispiece dated Aug. 22nd, 1859, p. 178), and H. Canfield (Hartford, Ct., 1823, p. 129). A variant was collected in Chicago from Kerry flute player Frank Thornton, then living in the city. "Tom Ash's March" was Thornton's name for the tune, the title of which memorializes Kerryman Ash who died on a hunger strike while imprisoned during the 1919 Irish War for Independence. See also note for "Murillo's Lesson."
