CHARMING KATTY/KATY'S. AKA and see "From Shore to Shore (2)," "Glee on the Shore." American; Reel. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Kennedy): AABB (Cole, Kerr, Ryan, White). The source for the tune appears to be Rhode Island fiddler, music teacher and music store owner George Saunders who printed it in his 1843 violin tutorial as "Glee on the Shore." Blackface minstrel performer George H. Coes included it in his 1870's collection as "Charming Katy's". The reel was picked up from Coes by William Bradbury Ryan and inserted in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), and then probably from Ryan's collection to Glaswegian James S. Kerr's Merry Melodies vol. 2. White's 1896 publication is from the Howe plates, while Kennedy's version may have been sourced to either Ryan or Kerr. However, Ryan also included the same reel again in his large collection, most likely unwittingly, under the title "From Shore to Shore (2)," perhaps echoing Saunders' title.
