CHICKEN PIE. American, Reel (2/4 or cut time). USA; Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma. A Major (Thede): G Major (Gilbert). Standard or AEae tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title appears in a list of traditional fiddle tunes of the Ozarks Mountains, compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. A tune by this title was also recorded in 1939 by Herbert Halpert for the Library of Congress from the playing of Mississippi fiddler W.E. Claunch, and in 1978 by John Harrod from the playing of north-central Kentucky fiddler Kelly Gilbert. A Missouri tune called "Chicken Pie" is a variant of "Dixie Blossoms" but it does not appear to be this tune, however, Thede's version collected from east-central Oklahoma fiddler Roy Bissell is substantially the same as Kelly Gilbert's, with a key change from 'A' to 'G'.
