DAVID'S HORNPIPE. AKA - "Davie's Hornpipe." English, Hornpipe. England, Northumberland. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Robert Whinham (1814-1893), a musician, teacher, composer, dancing master and fiddler, originally from Morpeth. A verse appears below the tune in the original manuscript:

David with his harp play'd psalms
To win the Lord into good terms
But had he play'd this merry strain
He'd pleas'd the Lord as well again.

As "Davie's Hornpipe" the tune appears in fiddler Jack "Kielder Jock" Davidson's Northumbrian manuscript from the early 20th century, a copy of which is in the Beamish Museum.

Source for notated version: an un-attributed 19th century manuscript in the Beamish Museum [Dixon].
