GASTON. American, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody is printed in George P. Knauff's Virginia Reels, volume IV (Baltimore, 1839, p. 3), published by George Willig. The tune is similar to "Nigger on the (?)reat" from an anonymous 1862 music manuscript collection (probably a fiddler's ms.), and the first strain is cognate with the minstrel tune "Hoop-de-doo-den-doo (2)."
