HESSIAN CAMP [1]. AKA and see "Hessian Dance (2)." English, Air (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in print in David Rutherford's Choice Collection of Sixty of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (London, 1750), reprinted in his Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances, vol. 2 (London, 1760). Later it was included by Charles and Samuel Thompson in their Compleat Collection, vol. 3 (London, 1773). "Hessian Camp" also appears in the music manuscript collection of James Biggins (Leeds, west Yorkshire, 1779). Instructions for the country dance called Hessian Camp can be found in several period American sources, including the copybooks of Clement Weeks (Greenfield, New Hampshire, 1783, although see note for "Talk:Hessian Dance (1)") and John Johnson (1769), and in the Phinney's publication A Select Collection of the Newest and Most Favorite Country Dances (Ostego, N.Y., 1808).
