Cited as having commonly been played for country dances in Orange County, New York in the 1930's (Lettie Osborn, New York Folklore Quarterly). O'Neill prints the tune as "Sweet Biddy Daly."
The tune entitled "Irishman's Heart to the Ladies" in the 1890's music manuscript collection of London dancing master Patrick D. Reidy is a version of "Drops of Brandy"; see Reidy's tune (a slip jig) under that title.

Paul Wells says "Norton is easily traced in [Boston city] directories from the early 1860's to the early 1890's.
