JACKSON'S MAGGOT. Irish. One of the tunes attributed to the mid-18th century Irish gentleman musician and composer Walter "Piper" Jackson. A maggot was a unit of liquid measure, a dram, but came to mean something of small consequence, or, musically, a slight melody; from the Italian maggioletta or a plaything.
