JACKY STEWART'S REEL. AKA - "Sir John Stewart of garaintully's Reel." AKA and see "Peggy's on the Burn," "Rory MacNab," "Scotch Tune (2) (A)." Scottish, Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. John Glen (1891) finds the tune first in print in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection. Almost fifty years after Bremner's printing, Edinburgh fiddler-composer included the reel in his Fourth Collection of New Strathspey Reels under the title "Sir John Stewart of garintully's Reel." Somewhere in the intervening years the title 'Jacky Stewart' had become confused with the title of several tunes that had been composed for 'Sir John Stewart Grantully.' Cumbrian musician Joseph Barnes entered a version in his 1760's music manuscript as "Scotch Tune (2) (A)." See Irish variants in the "Game of Love (The)" tune family. See also the similarly-titled (but melodically different) "Jakie Stewart's Reel", a version of "Highland Man that Kissed His Grannie (1)," published in London by the Thompsons.
