Composed by biography:William Christie (c. 1778-1849) of Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire, who was a postman, fiddler-composer and a dancing master, as well as a collector of Scottish songs and tunes. We do not know who the 'Mr. Gillan' was for whom Christie composed the tune, but a "William Gillan" is listed as a witness in the Old Parish Register of Cuminestown in 1839, where he is identified as a "Manufacturer."
