MRS. HUGH LUMSDEN'S STRATHSPEY--OF PITEAPLE. Scottish, Strathspey. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999) identifies Mrs. Lumsden as Frances Brebner, wife of Hugh, who inherited Pitcaple Castle from his father. The castle, near Colpy, Aberdeenshire, dates from the 15th century, when castles were beginning to look more like fortefied manor houses.
