BISHOP BUTLER OF KILCASH. AKA and see "The Boyne Water [1]." Irish, Air. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "More than a century ago, Bishop Butler of Kilcash, the Roman Catholic bishop of Cork, conformed to the Protestant religion (to which he had originally belonged). This naturally caused a great sensation in the South, and indeed all over Ireland; and many popular songs were composed to commemorate the event, most of them 'Lamentations'. The song I give here from memory is the best of them, and I learned it along with the air from hearing it sung in my home when I was a boyl So far as I am aware the words have never been printed before this in either book or broadsheet. In fact I never heard or say the song outside my father's house" (Joyce).
