BOTTLE BANK, THE. English, Scottish; Hornpipe. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The composition was credited to the great 19th century hornpipe composer biography:James Hill, who resided in Tyneside, Newcastle, in Kohler's Violin Repository, Book 1 (1881-1885, p. 28). Bottle Bank was the main route from Gateshead to the Old Tyne Bridge, and was the place Hill made his home for many years. A version of the tune was included in the mid-19th century music manuscript book of Northumbrian musician John Baty (c. 1840-60).
