BRIGHT LOVE OF MY HEART [1], THE (Grá Geal Mo Chroí). AKA- "Fair Love of My Heart." Irish, Air (3/4 time). G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The title appears in a list of tunes in his repertoire brought by Philip Goodman, the last professional and traditional piper in Farney, Louth, to the Feis Ceoil in Belfast in 1898 (Breathnach, 1997). However, there are several distinct melodies with the title, as Francis O'Neill points out in Irish Folk Music, a Fascinating Hobby (1910, p. 151).
A favorite term of endearment in Ireland was Gradh Geal Mo Chroidhe (gra gal machree), or "Bright Love of My Heart", for there are no less than six airs published under that name. Three of them are to be found in the Petrie collection, but they are variants of an original air. The two airs so named in O'Neill's Music of Ireland differ from them and from one another and from the sixth and latest air among the Forde manuscripts included in Dr. Joyce's recent work.
