EARL OF KINNOULL'S REEL. Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Captain Daniel Menzies (Gow, 1817). The 11th Earl of Kinnoull was Thomas Robert Hay-Drummond (1785-1866), who married Louisa Rowley daughter of Charles Rowley, 1st Lord Rowley, in August, 1824. The Earl was colonel in the Royal Perthshire Militia. The tune's composer, Capt. Daniel Menzies, was also a member of the Royal Perthshire Militia who died at Kinross (his death notice was published in Blackwoods Magazine, and the Edinburgh Courant of May 8th, 1828). According to Mary Anne Alburger (Scottish Fiddlers and their Music, p. 119), Menzies was a prolific composer, a number of whose compositions for fiddle were published (without his name attached) by Duncan M’Kerracher (1796-1873). Other instruments seem to have engaged his scope of interest, for he was the author of Airs on Clarsaich (Highland harp), containing his compositions and airs he played or sung, as well as A Treatise of the Angelica or Musical Glasses (1828). Menzies is also thought to have been the author of a bagpipe tutor called The Bagpipe Preceptor, published by Oliver and Boyd, and sold by Gow and Sons (Edinburgh).
