HEART BOWED DOWN, THE (An Croide Dub-Bronac). Irish, Slow Air (4/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A compostion by Michael Balfe (1808-1870), an Irish-born composer of opera, some of whose songs have entered tradition. O'Neill was criticized in some traditional circles for his inclusion of several of Balfe's melodies in his Music of Ireland on the grounds that "Balfe's music...was not Irish, even if he was" (O'Neill, 1913, p. 80).
