HUGH O'NEILL'S LAMENT (Caoine Aeda Uí Niall). Irish, Slow Air (4/4 time). D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The tune was in fact the composition of Chicago Police Sergeant James O'Neill, a fiddler originally from County Down. Francis O'Neill cited James as the composer in a letter to A.P. Graves in 1906 (c.f. Caoimhin Mac Aoidh, The Scribe).

Source for notated version: identified as "another of those fine melodies from the North of Ireland" (Irish Folk Music) contributed by fiddler Chicago Police Sergeant James O'Neill, a fiddler originally from Ulster [O'Neill].
