IRISH HO-HOANE, THE. English, Dance Air (Slow 6/8 time). D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The air appears in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, c. 1621. Chappell (1859) cites Sir Robert Stewart, author of an article on Irish music in Grove's Dictionary, who thought the 'Irishness' of the melody in doubt despite the title. Hoffman (1877) published the air in his collection of arrangements generally from the George Petrie collection. See the related "Ye Gods of Love."
