KINGSBRIDGE ASSEMBLY. AKA and see "Liberty for the Sailors." English, Country Dance Tune and Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody for the country dance tune "Kingsbridge Assembly," printed in London in 1780 by the Thompsons, was used as the vehicle for the song "Liberty for the Sailors." The tune under the later title was re-absorbed into traditional instrumental repertory.
The jig appears under the garbled title "King Brigs Assemble" in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset.
