KNOCKAWHINNA, THE. Irish, Jig. G Major ('A' and 'C' parts) & D Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'CC'. Composed by concertina and piano-accordion player Micheál Ó hEidhin in honor of Knochawhinna, near Rockchapel, County Cork, which Séamus Connolly says was a well known area for Irish traditional music. Ó hEidhin composed the melody when a student at University College Cork, and graduated to a career in music academia, teaching and promoting Irish traditional music. The jig was first recorded by the Siamsa Céilí Band (County Louth) and is sometimes called by that name ("Siamsa Jig (The)"). Marty Fahey, Brendan Bulger and Kathleen Gavin recorded the tune as "Galway Jig (2)" on their album "From House to House."
