LEOMINSTER ASSEMBLY. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was originally published in Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773). As with several of the Thompson's 1773 tunes, it was copied into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.). Dance instructions for Leominster Assembly appear in the Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1767. The assembly rooms for the Leominster Assembly (Herefordshire) are still intact in their almost-original state, in The Royal Oak, a coaching hotel dating from the early 18th century. The room has high ceilings, Georgian windows and a minstrels' gallery.
