LILLIE (sic), THE. AKA and see "Lily (The)." English (?), Country Dance Tune (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. Woburn, Massachusetts, fifer Seth Johnson entered the tune into his c. 1807-1840 commonplace book, as did fiddler or fifer John Fife. The latter was probably from Perthshire, although portions of his 1780 manuscript may have been written at sea (there are references to battles in Caribbean and the Mediterranean). Northumbrian musician William Vickers included it in his 1770 music manuscript collection as "The Lily."
