LOCHABER GATHERING. Scottish, Cape Breton; March (2/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. Composed by Pipe Major George S. McLennan [1] (1883-1929), the melody is popular at piping competitions. McLennan was born into a piping family; his father, Ian McLennan, published a rather small collection called The Piobaireachd in 1923.
The Lochobar Gathering is one of the premier pipe competitions that dates at least to 1816, when the event was recorded in the annals of the Highland Society of London. In modern times the Lochaber Gathering is held each July or August in the Highland town of Fort William.
