MEN FROM MALLOW, THE (Na Fir Ua Mag-Ealla). Irish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB.

O'Neill listed himself as the source for the setting in his 1903 Music of Ireland collection. This sometimes indicates a tune he picked up from an older collection but no such source has been identified. Paul DeGrae, in his commentary on O'Neill's sources, wrote that the version in his 1907 Dance Music of Ireland collection "shows most of the accented C notes as naturals, which sounds more idiomatic." On the other hand, a 1951 Ballinakill Ceili Band setting (named "Graces's Favorite," after the band's accordionist) recorded by Alan Lomax is strictly in the Dorian mode based on E, i.e., with only C sharps.
