MISS HELEN GRANT’S REEL. Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. “Miss Helen Grant’s Reel” appears in Glasgow publisher James Aird’s Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 5 (1797, p. 37), and appears unique in print to that collection. However, it was also entered into the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks, dated 1821. Unfortunately, nothing is known of Burks, although he may have been from the north of England. The tune was also entered into the large 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook, of Waverton, near Wigton, Cumbria, who copied (note-for-note) a good many of the tunes from Aird's 5th collection.
