MRS. GARDEN CAMPBELL OF TROUP AND GLENLYON'S STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was included in the 1820 collection of dancing master, fiddler and composer William Christie (1778-1849), who indicated it was an "old Gaelic air." It was “Communicated by Dr. Stewart”, meaning that it was passed along to Christie or perhaps even composed by Dr. Stewart (who may not have desired to make a public claim of the composition). Christie wrote a tune in his honor, “Dr. Stewart's Reel.”

Mrs. Garden Campbell was probably a member of the Irish gentry, Penelope Smythe, who was the spouse of Francis Garden, son of Peter Garden of Delgaty-—afterwards of Troup—-who, on succeeding his granduncle to the lands of Glenlyon, assumed the additional surname and arms of Campbell. They married in January, 1791, and she died at Carlogie Cottage, Aberdeenshire, in 1821. There were four Francis Gardens of Troup and Glenlyon in succession, until the fourth and last Francis Garden Campbell of Troup and Glenlyon sold his Glenlyon property to Sir Donald Currie in 1885.
