NAVAL PILLAR [2], THE. AKA and see "Miss Smyth's Reel," "Nelson's Pillar." Irish, Reel (cut time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appears under the "Naval Pillar" title in Dublin publisher Maurice Hime's Hime's Collection of Favourite Country Dances for the Present Year (1795, No. 11). It is related to "Nelson's Pillar" and "Miss Smyth's Reel," and, since Admiral Horatio Nelson died in 1805 (and is unlikely to have had a monument before his death), "Naval Pillar" would be the older version. The tune may not have an Irish provenance, and there is little of distinctive Irish character in the melody. Hime was a publisher originally from Liverpool, England, who established himself in Dublin around 1791. His collections are generally filled with British tunes, albeit some Irish ones occasionally appear.
