The tune is cognate with the Scottish/Cape Breton strathspey "Morag's Wedding." As "Sir Alexander Don's (2)," the strathspey was published in the late 18th century publications of Joshua Campbell and the Gows. See also the cognate first strain of William Marshall's "Grant Lodge." The melody has similarities to "Auld Lang Syne."
