SNUFF BOX. AKA and see "Bill Clancy's Delight," "Ladies' Delight," "Lady Elizabeth Percy's Reel," "Pretty Peggy (1)." Scottish, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The "Snuff Mill" melody appears in the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks, dated 1821, attributed to “W.M.” (photocopy in ed. possession). Unfortunately, nothing is known of Burks or where he may have obtained his title for this tune, although the ms. provenance is English. The reel itself has a Scottish origins (see Robert Petrie's "Pretty Peggy (1)"), but also appears in Francis O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1903) (as "Bill Clancy's Delight" and in the Boston-published Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) as "Ladies' Delight." A close variant was entered into Book 2 of the c. 1883 music manuscript collection of Co. Leitrim fiddler and piper Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894) under the title "Lady Elizabeth Percy's Reel."
