VILLAGERS, THE. AKA - "Cottager." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 or 2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. In addition to the Moore ms. (noted below), the tune appears in the 19th century music manuscript collections of the Welch family (Bosham, Sussex), Robert Hughes (Whitchurch, Shropshire, 1823), James Nuttal (Rossendale, east Lancashire, 1830), and Tiller (unknown origin). While the melody is usually set in triple time, at least one version (Hughes) is set in duple time.
